"Strewth,' exclaimed Jack Collins, 'that dog is a real stinker! i don't know how he puts up wth himself. If I dropped bombs like that, I'd walk around with my head in a paper bag, just to protect myself.'"
The story of Red Dog was inspired by the story of a kelpie who became famous for his travels and friendships across Western Australia. He is believed to have been born in Paraburdoo in 1971 and was known by several names by those who knew him, such as Bluey, Tally Ho and Dog of the Northwest.
Although well liked, it is believed he was poisoned with strychnine in 1979 while in Karratha. He was memorialised with a statue in Dampier where authors Nancy Gillespie, Beverly Duckett and Louis de Bernières have kept his story alive with poems, anecdotes and books.
The light hearted opening of this book, prepares the reader to embrace humour as they travel across the mining towns of the great expanse of Western Australia. How did you expect this book to unfold and were you prepared for it's ending?
